Language, Mathematical and Digital Literacy

Language, Mathematical and Digital Literacies, includes the skills of pre-writing, pre-reading and early mathematical concepts through to the acquisition of language including reading and writing, and mathematical literacy.

IT is used as a key resource for learning.  Books and reading are a key part of the program. Teachers provide ‘Take Home Readers’ and books from the JWA library.  Teachers, students and parents also have access to the SWA library with over 15,000 books.

Language Acquisition

English and Chinese are the predominant languages at JWA.  Bahasa Indonesia is also an option. All homeroom classes are led by native English-speaking, qualified and experienced, western expatriate Homeroom Teachers.

Chinese is taught in Toddler to Kindergarten 2 classes, through an immersion language program. In this program, a native Chinese-speaking teacher works alongside the homeroom teacher throughout the day.

In Grade 1-2 students learn in intensive model (80 minutes per day). In addition to ‘formal’ Chinese lessons each day, Chinese is spoken as a parallel language, providing an environment that leads to strong language skills in both languages.

SWA will provide an English/Chinese bilingual track from Grade 3-12 for those students wishing to continue these studies.
