As the Kindergarten 1 students were exposed to various stories, numerous fairy tales as well fable in class, they become eager to learn more about different ways of telling stories. They learnt that puppetry has been one of the oldest forms of storytelling around the world.
The Kindergarten 1 class explored the Wayang Museum together with Kindergarten 1 students from SWA last Thursday, 1 March 2018. The tour started with a 3D movie shown in the Museum’s mini theatre. The movie is a traditional Indonesian folktale entitled “Arjun a VS. Karna”. It was then followed by a tour around the Museum wherein the students saw various puppets from different parts of Indonesia. The puppets are made out of different materials and sizes depending on the place where it came from. Mostly the puppets are depicting the characters from the story entitled “Rama and Shinta”. The collection showed not only locally made puppets but as well as puppets from different parts of world like “Russian Marionettes” and “Japanese Wooden Puppets”.
The highlight of the trip was the hands-on puppet making activity led by the museum’s tour guide. Each child was able to make his/her own “Wayang Puppet” out dried of grass. They were also given a short time to explore the traditional musical instruments after the tour.
